Tais are the traditional textiles of East Timor/Timor Leste. Woven on narrow handlooms, larger pieces like this one are typically 3 panels sewn together. This item uses traditional colours and a traditional crocodile motif. The crocodile is the national symbol of East Timor and features in its origin myth. I don't the exact age, but the market vendor from whom I bought it in Dili (East Timor's capital), said it was "old." The colours are somewhat faded due to its age.
